Alleged prostitute sentenced to 30 years 4 men’s overdose deaths

A New York City sex worker has been sentenced to 30 years behind bars for the fatal overdose of four men, including Cipriani Dolci Chef Andrea Zamperoni.

United States District Judge Brian M. Cogan handed down the sentence Tuesday for 43-year-old Angelina Barini, who pleaded guilty in August to two counts of distributing narcotics that caused the death of a person, one count of distributing fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine and one count of conspiring to distribute gamma-butyrolactone (GBL), according to a statement from the United States Attorney’s Office Eastern District of New York.

Authorities say between July and August of 2019, Barini gave her victims narcotics to “incapacitate” them and then robbed them of their belongings, ultimately killing four men.

“The defendant drugged and killed multiple people for a few quick dollars. She stole their personal belongings while they lay unconscious dying from the lethal drugs she gave them,” United States Attorney Breon Peace said. “The defendant’s substantial prison sentence is warranted by her shocking disregard for human life.”

Prosecutors said Barini often met with her victims at local hotels and then gave them “fentanyl-laced drugs,” causing them to overdose.

On August 18, 2019, she met with a man identified by The New York Post and other local media outlets as Cipriani Dolci chef Andrea Zamperoni-at an Elmhurst, Queens motel room and drugged him with the “date rape” drug GBL.

Zamperoni died shortly after entering the motel room. Prosecutors said Barini made “repeated attempts” to dispose of the body, however, on Aug. 21, 2019, NYPD officers found his remains wrapped in bleach-stained sheets stuffed into a garbage bin inside the motel room.

Officers also discovered a power saw, empty suitcase, glass pipes for smoking narcotics and “purple liquid in a glass with a powder at the top of the liquid and around the rim,” according to court documents obtained by WNYW.

Barini had claimed at the time she didn’t kill Zamperoni and that her pimp wouldn’t let her call police.

She pleaded guilty to providing the narcotics and causing the deaths of multiple men in August, according to authorities.

On Tuesday, Cogan acknowledged that Barini had come from a troubled family and had a drug habit that “robbed her” of some of her free will, but said her past did not excuse her actions.

“There is no level of disadvantage of being raised that can mitigate what you did here. … Drug addiction or no drug addiction, something has to kick in,” he said in court, according to The New York Post.

Before the sentence was handed down, a cousin of one of the victims said she did not feel sympathy for Barini, despite her past.

“I understand she doesn’t have a good history,” the cousin said. “I don’t have a good history. It’s no excuse. She killed four people. … She deserves what she gets now.”

She spoke of her slain’s cousin future in construction and his plans to go to school, which were all taken away the day he died.

“I don’t forgive you,” the woman said. “We were best friends. She took that away. She took that away. I don’t feel sorry for you.”

Barini’s older sister described the sentence to the news outlet as “a little

She said Barini plans to appeal the sentence.

I AM A LOVER OF FAT SALARIES – MINISTER FOR PUBLIC ENTERPRISES

Minister for Public Enterprises, Joseph Cudjoe, has said that he is an advocate of fat salaries for public sector workers who perform.

At a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, Joseph Cudjoe explained, however, that payment of fat salaries becomes an issue when the worker fails to perform his or her duties.

“Maybe you are talking to the wrong person on salaries when it is fat. I openly declare anywhere that I am an advocate for a good salary and if this is bad tell me this is bad…If the person is performing and being paid good salary, I would clap for the person. If the person is not performing and taking that good salary, you exact performance from the person because you are paying the person. So I am a lover of fat salary. You can’t use me to pay people bad, I always speak for people who are not paid well,” he said.

The minister justified his position by indicating that what makes a country wealthy, “is for people to be paid good salaries”.

He added, “when people get good salaries, it is when they can cater for their needs and also save in the financial system then deposits build up in the financial system. [You] give loans to businesses and individuals who need them. So if someone is taking a good salary, the issue is always whether the person is giving an output that reflects the salary, that is all.”

The minister also dispelled suggestions for the sacking of non-performing CEOs of state-owned enterprises stressing the fault may not be entirely theirs.

“They are reporting losses because we are not willing to pay the right prices. Because to report profit means that revenue must be generated, cost should be paid, interests should be generated, taxes, utilities, tariffs, every cost should be paid for and you record profits.

“Their reporting of profits depends on us, not the managers, because the manager might be technically competent, professionally savvy and everything, but right pricing or wrong pricing is what would determine their profitability,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry has revealed that state-owned enterprises reported a GH¢5.3 billion loss in their operations in the 2020 fiscal year.

It added that some SOEs have been reluctant to submit annual accounts since 2017.

To fix the poor state of some of the entities, the Finance Ministry is warning it will no longer support requests for assistance by SOEs that fail to meet the reporting requirements specified in the Public Financial Act.

Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. John Kumah, announced this at a forum held by the State Interest and Governance Authority (SIGA) in Accra on Friday, January 28, 2022.

MENZGOLD CUSTOMERS CALL FOR THE ARREST, PROSECUTION OF STONEBWOY

Stonebwoy

The Coalition of Aggrieved Customers of Menzgold (CACM) is calling for the arrest and subsequent prosecution of musician Stonewbwoy for promoting a crypto investment dubbed SidiCoinNFT.

According to the Aggrieved Customers, SidiCoinNFT is an unlicensed financial scheme that has been identified to be a scam.

In a press release issued by them, CACM said the unlicensed scheme has been structured in almost the same manner as Menzgold was.

“Their legal terms, purity of gold of the coin being offered, fixed percentages of dividend one is assured, and language of their terms and conditions cleverly tells you that this business is a Nam1-made scam,” the group stated.

CACM wrote that “we are, therefore, calling on the relevant security agencies and state authorities to investigate, arrest, and prosecute all those behind this sidicoinNFT and its brand ambassador Stonebwoy without delay.”

The group also wants the musician to be stripped of any national or corporate award given to him over the years following his

This comes barely a week after Stonebwoy tweeted and introduced his fans to this new business, telling them times are changing; hence joining SidiCoinNFT will help every hardworking individual to make money.

But, moments after his tweet, he and media personality Bridget Otoo engaged in a heated verbal exchange.

Ms Otoo had advised the former against publicly endorsing investment deals after Stonebwoy introduced a non-fungible token (NFT), SidiCoinNFT.

She insisted that it would be insensitive for the dancehall musician to make a move against the backdrop of his ambassadorial role in the Menzgold saga.

Stonebwoy did not seem enthused and responded that “I think it’s very BIASED and PREJUDICED to pin the loss of lives and properties on ambassadors WHO in NO WAY RAN the said company.”

“I know people who have lost monies and others who gained, and I have personally lost very close relatives too.”

The aggrieved customers in their statement noted that they have not forgotten Stonebowy’s role in promoting Menzgold to his millions of followers.

They added that “he and others lured their followers into investing in Menzgold, which has resulted in the deaths of not less than 179 victims with many others down with various degrees of ailments”.

CACM noted that because of Stonebwoy’s huge following across social media platforms, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, his actions and the influence he has on people should not be taken lightly.

“In other jurisdictions and given the events with what has happened to Menzgold victims, Stonebwoy, if properly pricked by his conscience, and if they have any regrets, would have been pricked to organise concerts or shows and or set up funds to assist victims of MenzGold since he and his colleague ambassadorial roles and influence in Menzgold have resulted in a national disaster,” they said.

The group also urged their members and other aggrieved customers to stay away from the financial scheme.

The now free convict said his parents advised him on several occasions to quit but he turned a deaf ear to their counsel now he regrets his actions.

“My school father sold weed in the bush where we had everything there including utensils and cooking stoves so after smoking we cook and eat there. My school father could smoke five rolls of the substance whiles I take three rolls. My parents even tried to disown me unless I stopped smoking but I was addicted and did not heed their advice,” he said.

Rasheed said after he completed school, he advanced from smoking to sniffing cocaine and abusing other drugs including tramadol and ‘D-10’ when he met some friends at Kumasi in the Ashanti Region. He was then introduced to armed robbery.

“I joined a gang and we undertook robbery with a knife. We do not care if it is in a gathering, we will threaten you with a knife and make away with everything we find on our victims. In a night, we can make about Two Thousand Ghana cedis. The highest amount we made in a day was Five Thousand Ghana cedis,” he said.

“After a day’s robbery, we come back to the ghetto and give the stolen items to the gang leader who will give us our share. We usually do not present all the items. We hide some for ourselves,” he added.

Rasheed who had a huge scar on his hand said, his ghetto senior nearly slashed off his hand when they faced off with each other.

How he was arrested

In an operation, which ended his robbery career, he said he robbed a lady of her mobile phone but unfortunately, the victim was his neighbor, and was able to identify him.

He said the lady reported him to the police and he was arrested.

Rasheed said he was put before the court and was fined One Thousand Two Hundred Ghana cedis. He said he defaulted in paying the fine and was jailed for twenty-four months.

Narrating his experience in prison, Rasheed said the chime for them to go to bed at 4:30 pm breaks him down. He was bitter about the food served to inmates and their sleeping arrangements gives him reason to repent.

Luck dawned on him when Crime Check Foundation (CCF), chanced on him at the Manhyia Prison in the Ashanti Region.

CCF paid his fine with the contributions of its donors, US-based Victoria and Felicia.

He was thankful for the support and promised to turn a new leaf.

The Ofaakor Circuit Court has remanded a 31-year-old labourer in prison custody for allegedly stealing his pastor’s 12 gold rings valued at GH¢120,000.

The accused, Danladi Abass, pleaded not guilty to the charge of stealing when he appeared before the court presided over Mr Ebenezer Osei Darko.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Charles Annobil, said the complainant, Rev Kelvin Bour, a pastor at the Seventh Day Good News Ambassadors Church and Abass were both residents of Everlip in Kasoa.

He said about a year ago, Abass, who was a church member of the complainant told him (complainant) that he (Abass) had dreamt about someone gifting him gold and was directed to deal in gold business.

Chief Inspector Annobil said the pastor, during the conversation, dashed to his room and brought out 12 gold rings valued at GH¢120,000 to demonstrate to the accused the quality of real gold.

He said Abass after the meeting, secretly went and stole all the 12 gold rings from his pastor’s room and sold them at Adabraka.

The prosecutor said investigation was ongoing to retrieve the gold rings.

2 in Police grips for alleged premix diversion in Keta

Some two persons have been arrested by the Keta Police for their involvement in the alleged diversion of premix fuel meant for Keta fisherfolks in the Volta Region.

A driver and the Secretary of the Nukpesekope Landing Beach Committee, Jeoffrey James Ocloo, were picked up on Tuesday morning in the Keta Municipality.

The two are currently helping the police investigations to unravel the case.

According to Augustine Ocloo, a resident in Keta, he was informed that a Goodness Energy fuel tanker with registration number, GT 5422 Z, was spotted parked around the Nukpesekope premix fuel depot on Tuesday morning.

He said the driver, however, drove off without discharging fuel, a development which rose suspicion of residents of a possible diversion.

“We detailed a vehicle to monitor the tanker. What is surprising is that the Nukpesekope Landing Beach Committee Secretary, Jeoffrey James Ocloo, who is close to the MCE had signed the waybill. The Chief fisherman who is sick and bedridden had his portion also signed”, he narrated.

“We monitored the tanker, which stopped at Afiadenyigba junction, moved and stopped at Avalavi, then to Abor. We, therefore, concluded that the fuel had been diverted so we called in the Police who arrested the driver.”

He further indicated that “the driver then called suspect Jeoffrey James Ocloo who upon arriving at the scene said ‘the issue should be settled here’, but I objected to his suggestion and indicated that we must find where the fuel was sent. Already, the seal on the tanker was broken”.

Jeoffery was subsequently arrested together with the driver and sent to the Keta Police Station, where the two were put behind bars.

The Goodness Energy tanker is also parked at the premises of the Keta Divisional Police Command.

The Keta Divisional Police Commander, Chief Supt Leonard Abakah, declined to comment on the case indicating that he had just received the docket of the case hence would need time to study it before speaking to the media, when Joy News contacted him.

Residents are, however, demanding the National Premix Committee investigate the distribution of fuel to the Keta Municipality within the last 3 months.

They are of the conviction that the majority of the fuel meant for Keta Municipality fisherfolks might have been diverted for the parochial gains of a few.

“We residents of Keta rely heavily on fishing to support our livelihood but we hardly get supply of the fuel. We are suspecting the fuel meant for us were diverted, the authorities must investigate this”, said Senyo Christian Mawulorm, a Mofa Rep on the Nukpesekope Premix Committee

The Keta Municipal Chief Executive, Emmanuel Gemegah, acknowledged receipt of the news of the alleged premix fuel diversion but said he can’t speak to the media about the incident until he returns to Keta.

“I am currently in Accra in a meeting with authorities at the Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority. I don’t have enough information so I can’t speak to the incident until I return to Keta”, he said to Fred Quame Asare in a telephone conversation.
